Kyle Lucas

Kyle Lucas has a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision and is a Licensed Professional Counselor. He has been a mental health therapist since 2007 and has worked with a wide range of clientele. He is founder and has been the co-owner of Ability Counseling since its inception in 2011. He specializes in areas such as: treatment for individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, problematic sexual behavior, early childhood abuse, sexual victimization, anxiety, and depression. He provides Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) treatment to address trauma and has training and experience working with juveniles and play therapy with children.

 

He received his Master’s Degree in Forensic Psychology from the University of Denver in 2008 and his PhD form the University of Northern Colorado in 2018. He is Full Operating Level Treatment Provider and Evaluator with an Intellectual/Developmental Disability Specialty with the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB). Additionally, he is an approved Clinical Supervisor with the SOMB and provides supervision for student interns and Master’s Degree level therapists seeking licensure. He provides regular training and consultation for direct support persons providing residential, day programming, and employment programming services for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

 

His training, education, and experiences have shaped his theoretical framework which includes drawing from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Attachment Theory and Interpersonal Process Models, and EMDR. He approaches therapy with a desire to create a compassionate and collaborative atmosphere with clientele from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life. He has been described as “even keeled” and believes it is vital for individuals to feel free to express and explore all thoughts and emotions with a non-judgmental therapist to allow them to find the courage to examine themselves and find the motivation for change.

 

Outside of his clinical work, he has been a professor at several universities in Colorado including Adams State University, Regis University, and the University of Northern Colorado teaching counseling and psychology courses. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends and family and finding live music, being outdoors, hiking, and camping.
